Garcinia cambogia has more benefits than side effects

Garcinia cambogia is actually a plant and since the extracts obtained from its fruit rind are said to cause weight loss, there are supplements made from it. There are different brand names for it as well as common names which include Malabar tamarind, Hydroxycitric Acid or HCA.

The benefits of Garcinia cambogia

The plant family, Clusiaceae, to which Garcinia cambogia belongs, is found in many Asian countries including India. It has been used in traditional medicines since centuries but its use in modern supplements is a recent development. It is because that it contains HCA that it is believed that it can help improve exercise performance but scientific studies have yet to come.  Some studies believe that it can help in losing weight and may help in slightly overweight individuals but those who are overly obese, may have to seek medical help. In addition to using Garcinia cambogia in traditional medicines, many Asian countries also use it as a flavouring substance in their food preparations.

The fruit rind extracts of Garcinia cambogia contains HCA in high quantities and it is the component that brings about weight loss. It can prevent carbohydrates into turning into fatty acids. This process also leads to suppression of appetite. Also, HCA can even enhance the capacity of liver to store glycogen which in turn can help endurance levels and also help in weight loss.  What HCA does is it prevents the action of the enzyme called as citrate lyase that converts carbohydrate into fats. This happens when the body uses these carbohydrates and helps in its oxidation. This is when the person feels full and does not have to binge eat. Users may experience side effects.

The side effects of Garcinia cambogia

Since the Garcinia cambogia supplements are made from plant extracts, there aren’t too many side effects associated with it. But then, since not all people can accept supplements alike, the way they react to them too will be different. So, it all depends on person to person. Some may have nausea, some may complain of headaches, while some may have digestive issues. There are also not many studies that point to the side effects of Garcinia cambogia. That Iists why, people who are on certain medications and are suffering from health problems, pregnant and lactating women are not advised to take the supplement.

Also, those who are on anti-depressant medicines such as Demerol, Zoloft, etc, should also refrain from taking the supplement. Also, it all depends on how much pure extracts your supplement contains. Then, there are brands that sell tablets that contain synthetically manufactured HCA instead of the natural extracts, which helps them keep the cost down but these pills may not be that effective as the ones that contain natural HCA.

Generally, the supplement is to be taken just for 12 weeks and it will not pose any side effects. The effects of using it in the long term cannot be determined as there has not been any important study in this front.
